Heartland Catfish Monitoring Dashboard

Why It's Important

Here in Mississippi, we take our catfish seriously — and so do the folks at Heartland Catfish Company. Located in rural Itta Bena, MS, this family-owned company utilizes GIS technology developed by The Geospatial Group to monitor their fish, pond quality, and feeding metrics to ensure customers are provided high-quality, farm-raised catfish for their tables.

Heartland Catfish Application

The Heartland Catfish application offers a centralized platform for quickly checking current pond statuses and streamlining essential data tracking. With seamless data integration, it simplifies the monitoring of key parameters such as fish weight, feeding activity, and flavor checks. To support this modern approach to data management and quality control, The Geospatial Group leveraged ESRI's ArcGIS Dashboard to deliver an efficient and user-friendly solution.

Heartland Catfish processes 60 million pounds of catfish annually—accounting for one out of every five pounds produced in the U.S.

User Interface

Interactive Dashboard

The dashboard is organized into four main sections: Status, Flavor, Feed, and Weight. Each section contains multiple maps relevant to its focus area, navigable through tabs at the bottom of each. These sections were collaboratively designed with Heartland, tailored to their specific needs and data priorities. The dashboard is regularly updated with data sourced from spreadsheets maintained by workers as they record feeding activity and pond statuses.

Section Overviews

  • Status: Displays whether ponds are stocked, cleaned, or otherwise managed, along with water quality metrics such as ammonia and nitrites.

  • Flavor: Tracks when ponds require flavor testing, supporting quality assurance efforts.

  • Feed: Visualizes past feed quantities for each pond, with graphs showing trends over various time ranges.

  • Weight: Allows tracking of fish weights and headcounts across ponds.

Key Features

  • Offers a fast, visual representation of multiple datasets in a single, cohesive application.

  • Built using ESRI's ArcGIS Web Maps, enabling powerful functionality through map layering and integration.

  • Maps are dynamically connected to category selectors and data filters located in a collapsible sidebar. For example, selecting a specific Fish Type or Farm updates all maps simultaneously.

  • Tables adjacent to the maps are interactive — users can click on individual or multiple rows to filter the maps and graphs accordingly.

  • The interoperability between filters, maps, tables, and graphs allows users to explore their data visually and intuitively — a major reason for choosing the Dashboard as the foundation for this solution.
